All in Good Health: Healthy Holiday Gift Ideas

  • Dec 2, 2016

The holidays are upon us, providing the perfect opportunity to come up with tangible ways to show appreciation for all of the professional people in your life. And what better way to express gratitude than to encourage good health at a time when so many succumb to sickness?

Unfortunately, illness is an unwelcome companion that often accompanies the holiday season. Experts disagree about the cause. Some attribute the anomaly to travel. Others point to what’s known as the “let down effect,” while others blame Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s festivities because they require people to congregate, which increases exposure to viruses and bacteria.

Healthy Holiday Gift Ideas

Whatever the cause, we have come up with some gift ideas that will help your clients, patients, customers, vendors and friends beat the sniffle-filled storm:duffle-bag

  • Work out – resist the temptation to let holiday happenings overtake your fitness regime. But don’t beat yourself up. It may not be possible to fit five workouts in a week between get-togethers, shopping trips and holiday baking. But instead of giving up, make a commitment to run, bike or Zumba at least three days a week.

  • showroompic-5Eat right – comfort food is appealing when temperatures drop and time is in short supply. But you can’t expect your body to run right if you are filling it with junk food. If cold meals like salads leave you uninspired, make a pot of hearty vegetable soup to grab on the go.
  • Sleep – experts recommend at least eight hours per night for adults, although a Gallup poll reports that 40 percent of all Americans just 6.8 hours of shut eye per night. If you can’t get a full eight, try to catch a catnap, which has been proven to improve performance.
  • Drink water, which regulates temperature, lubricates and cushions joints, protects spinal cord as well as other tissue, and helps eliminate waste through urination and perspiration.
  • qpic-1Sanitize! Wash your hands with soap and hot water as often as possible during the holidays. If you don’t have access to a sink and faucet, avail yourself of hand sanitizer, which is known to reduce bacteria on skin.

Healthy Holiday Case Study

An On Target client asked us to help them with a gift that would help their employees move. They understood that the healthier their staff members were, the more alert they would be at work and the less time they would spend away from the job. So they set a walking goal for their employees for a 3-month period. Each employee who reached the goal received a gym duffle bag. This program was a win-win: healthier employees had fewer sick days and employees were delighted with a reward that marked their achievement.
